10 Back-to-School Organisation Tips That Actually Stick

4 August 2026

The short answer: the families who glide through term one do three things — label everything before day one, give every child a colour, and build a “launch pad” by the door. Here are ten habits that survive past February.

1. Label before the first day

Label books, bottles and uniforms the week before school starts, not the night before. It is a 30-minute job with printed labels and an iron — and stick-on labels want 24–48 hours to cure anyway, so earlier is better.

2. One colour per child

Choose a label colour per child. Sorting washing, lunch boxes and pencil cases becomes glance-work.

3. Build a launch pad

One shelf or hook per child by the door: bag, hat, shoes, notes. Everything school-bound lives there and nowhere else.

4. The uniform station

Five hangers, one per day, filled on Sunday. Missing-sock drama moves from 8:15am to Sunday afternoon.

5. Lunch-box production line

Label boxes on the base and lid, prep cut fruit and snacks in labelled containers on Sunday, and let kids assemble their own.

6. The paperwork inbox

One tray for school notes. Empty it every Thursday night — permission slips are always due Friday.

7. Hat insurance

No-hat-no-play means a lost hat costs playtime. An iron-on label under the brim brings hats home from lost property all year.

8. Shoe labels, left and right

Label each shoe — halves of a pair separate in every sports change room. Shoe labels go inside the heel, under the clear protective cover.

9. The term-one reset

Week one of each term: restock pencils, re-label anything faded, check the hat still fits.

10. Keep spares

Keep leftover labels in the kitchen drawer. New drink bottle in May? Labelled before it leaves the bench.
