6 Ways to Make the Most of Your Christmas Family Time

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and there are many ways to enjoy it with your family.

When it comes to Christmas, spending time with our loved ones is a major reason why it’s so special. After a busy year of work and school, it’s finally time to spend time together as a family over the holidays. Despite the romanticized images of a white Christmas complete with snow, decadent feasts, merry-makings, and warm gatherings around a fire, the true meaning of the holiday is one of reunion. However, things aren’t always as they appear on the surface. It’s never too early to start thinking of Christmas activities for the whole family, so don’t wait until the last minute.

To get you started on your family’s Christmas festivities, here are six ideas:

1. Make your own holiday greeting cards.

What better way to show your loved ones how much you care than with a handcrafted card? Assign everyone in the family a crafty chore, such as writing the message, adding glitter, or painting drawings on the front, to make it a family affair. As long as you don’t mind that they’re a little rough around the edges, they’ll be appreciated by your loved ones.

2. As a family, read a Christmas-themed novel.

Consider reading a Christmas novel like The Grinch or A Christmas Carol throughout the weeks running up to Christmas as a special treat for storytime. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for parents to connect with their children and teach them the true meaning of Christmas when they’re all excited about presents and food. Books may not be your thing but classic Christmas movies are an excellent way to get everyone together in the holiday spirit every Saturday night.

3. Make plans for a vacation during the summer months.

When the weather is gloomy and rainy, why not plan a vacation for the summer of 2015? Talk about and research various places around this time of year, and you’ll be able to take advantage of some fantastic early bird deals. Rather than staying in a hotel, more and more families are booking vacation rentals like Crete villa holidays so they can enjoy a more luxurious stay complete with a fully outfitted kitchen and, in some cases, a pool. When you’re planning a family vacation, give your kids a project to undertake before you leave: study what they’d want to do when they arrive.

4. Decorate the tree with handcrafted ornaments

Christmas with the family isn’t complete without those cherished, tattered homemade ornaments that have been treasured and brought out each year. When it comes to decorating your home for the holidays, there are a plethora of internet tutorials to select from.

5. Prepare some Christmas snacks.

It’s never too early to start making your favorite holiday foods, so break out the cookie cutters and get to work. A Christmas pudding or a chocolate Yule log might be more to your taste, however. It’s never too early to indulge in your favorite foods and get the kids involved in the kitchen.

6. Look after the elderly.

At Christmas, it’s wonderful to have your grandparents nearby. It’s possible to feel connected to your grandparents no matter where they are or what kind of care facility they are in. However, you can still look after them and other older people throughout the holidays. Adult-gerontology nurse practitioners can spend their vacation time to help others. During the holiday season, you can spread happiness and cheer to others around you.
